POCATELLO — It was a roller coaster ride to the finish of the regular season on Thursday as the Blackfoot Lady Broncos split their road double dip at Century by first falling 5-4 in eight innings in the opening game before rebounding for a tidy 1-0 victory in the night cap.
"It was really, really important to come out and get that win in game two after losing that first one," Blackfoot head coach Matt Chavez said. "The attitudes of the entire team was just fantastic."
Blackfoot led for the entirety of the first game as they took the lead 1-0 with a run in the top of the third and then extended that to 4-0 courtesy of a three run bomb over the centerfield fence by Mattison Chavez in the top of the fifth.
Century answered with a lone run in the home half of the fifth but stellar Blackfoot defense cut down a pair of Lady Diamondback base runners in the frame as Alli Smith gunned down a runner trying to stretch a single into a double and Mattison Chavez gunned down a runner at third base.
Century were able to eventually tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning as the home team rallied for three runs, all of which scored with two outs in the inning to send the game into extra innings where they eventually won the game with a run in the bottom of the eighth.
"We could have hung our heads but we didn't and I'm happy with that," Coach Chavez said. "We started some younger girls in the second game just to get ready for districts and the positive attitudes from the entire team were a key in the second game."
Blackfoot earned the victory in the night cap with a fine pitching performance from Makayla Rowsell and Mallory Chavez as they combined to hold the Century line up to just 4 hits while striking out 10 between them.
Rowsell worked the first five innings for the win while Chavez entered in the sixth to pick up the save for the Broncos.
"Makayla was just fantastic in both games and Mallory came up from JV for us and did a heck of a job," Coach Chavez said. "Heading into districts we will stay with our first game line up for the most part but Mallory stood up today and will probably pitch in districts for us."
With the pitching and defense locked in all the Lady Broncos needed was a run for the win and in the end it was a pair of seniors who provided the fire power as Jamie Horsley swatted a one out, sixth inning double. One batter later, Rowsell helped her own cause with a 2-out, RBI double to lift the Lady Broncos to victory.
Blackfoot (11-9, 6-4) will open up their conference tournament on Saturday as they will host either Madison or Shelley. Game time is 11 A.M.
