LaRue Norman Bird, 91, passed away Monday, July 23, 2012, at her home in Groveland.
She was born Jan. 23, 1921, in Blackfoot to Zenas William and Daisy Strong Norman. LaRue was raised on the family farm in the Rose area where she learned to work hard in the fields, raising potatoes, sugar beets and doing chores around the home. She enjoyed school, teaching church classes and was a graduate of Blackfoot High School and seminary in 1938.
On Jan. 3, 1940, she married Vernon Bird in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. They bought a farm across the street from his parents, where they lived for the past 72 years.
She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a visiting teacher for over 50 years, Relief Society president, teacher development trainer, and a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. LaRue loved to play the piano by ear where she was very talented playing for family gatherings, church skits and performances. She had a special gift to meet people and establish friendships, many she developed and kept her entire life.
Her happiest hours were spent watching one of Norman’s ball games, working in her flower or rock garden, traveling, playing a game, playing the piano or reading or teaching her grandchildren or great-grandchildren. In her later years, she enjoyed watching Lawrence Welk or a Utah Jazz basketball game on television. LaRue worked at Sunspice for 20 years, where she was a head potato grader.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Vernon Bird; sister, Ileene Sisson and grandson, Brandon Bird.
She is survived by her son, Norman (LeeAnn) Bird of Blackfoot; grandchildren Jared (Alicia) Frank, Jason Bird, Nicole (Jason) Lilya and Sheene (Joel) Jaeger; great- grandchildren, Ryan Frank, Kaylee Frank, Brennen Frank, Anyka Frank, Ashlyne Frank, AyBree Lilya and Livie Lilya.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, 2012, at the Groveland LDS Chapel, 155 N. 380 W. in Groveland.
The family will meet with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 27, 2012, at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave., and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Interment will be in the Groveland Cemetery.
