POCATELLO – The Century Diamondbacks had the defending 4A state champion Broncos on the ropes, up 14-13 with the ball on the Bronco 26-yard line. All of that changed in a heartbeat however as Blackfoot’s Brock Baguley intercepted a Shane Rominger pass in the endzone and then returned it to the 18-yard line.
That spark eventually carried the Broncos to a 34-14 victory.
“That was a great play by Brock just an outstanding job,” Blackfoot head coach Stan Buck said.
Eleven plays and 82 yards later the Broncos took the lead for good with a Mitch Martin 2-yard touchdown plunge a two point conversion and a 21-14 Bronco lead. On the drive Blackfoot rushed the ball on every play as the offensive line created gaping holes in the Century defensive front.
“Century came out in a cover two and were trying to take away our passing game so if your going to face seven men in the box then we are going to take advantage of that,” Coach Buck said. “We have some veteran leaders up front and they did a good job of executing and wearing Century down.”
Blackfoot followed that with a three and out by the defense and on the ensuing punt, Colby Pearson took the rock to the house with a 65-yard punt return and a once close game was now a 28-14 Bronco advantage.
“I saw that it was a line drive punt and I knew that I would have a good chance at returning it,” Pearson said. “I started to the left and then saw a seam to the right and once I hit it I just kept going.”
Century responded with a nice little drive on their next offensive possession eventually stalling out when Alonzo Ramos picked off Rominger at the 4-yard line.
Sixteen plays later, fifteen of which were on the ground once again the Broncos were in the endzone with another Martin touchdown, this time from 5-yards out for the final tally of the night and a 34-14 victory.
“We’re happy. We got some big plays and we didn’t get super excited about being down at the end of the first half,” Coach Buck said. “Century did a good job and in the second half we made a few adjustments in our run defense and the kids did a good job of closing them down.”
On the night Blackfoot’s Kyler Haddon led the charge with 107 yards rushing on 16 carries which included a touchdown.
Blackfoot (2-0) will be on the road again next Friday when they cross the river for the ages old rivalry game with the Snake River Panthers (1-2). Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
