Darrell J. Leavitt, 86, passed away peacefully Sept. 8, 2012 in Blackfoot surrounded by family.
Darrell was born June 10, 1926 to George and Lillie Lowe Leavitt in Moreland. His family moved to a ranch on the Barton Flat above Mackay when he was four years old. Darrell graduated from Mackay High School in 1944 and spent most of the rest of his life in the ranching business.
Darrell met the love of his life, Alice Cearly, at a St. Patrick’s Day dance at the old Eagles Hall. They were married Sept. 24, 1947. They spent the next 65 years together raising two wonderful children and enjoying each other's company as they made their journey through life together.
Darrell was a dedicated rancher and community member as was demonstrated by his participation in the Idaho Cattlemen’s Association, the Lost River Irrigation District, the Mackay Community Church and the Masonic Lodge. Darrell also spent many enjoyable summers riding for the Copper Basin Cattlemen’s Association. Darrell was known for his love of breaking horses, love of animals, and could almost always be found with one of his beloved dogs by his side.
Darrell is survived by his wife of 65 years, Alice of Mackay; daughter Vicki Jo Dunn of Mackay; son Darri (Sylvia) of Spanaway, Wash.; grandsons Brian Dunn (Lisa), Todd (Anne), Jason (Amber), Justin and Jordan (Lindsey); seven great-grandchildren; brother, Don of Utah, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lillie; sisters, Leatha Funk, Hazel Farmer, Norma Woodring and Venna Phillips; brothers, Frank, Keith and Noel, and son-in-law, Creig Dunn.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the Mackay Community Church. Tributes and condolences can be addressed to The Leavitt Family, 5519 Fish Hatchery Road, Mackay, Idaho 83251.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mackay EMT’s or a charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements ar under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave., Blackfoot, and Lost River Funeral Chapel, 345 Sunset Dr., Arco.
