Velda Mae Blackburn, 88, of Springfield passed away Dec. 1, 2012 at Bingham Memorial Hospital in Blackfoot.
Velda was born May 7, 1924 in Moreland to Harrison McKnight and Myrtle Parker. She lived her lifetime in Bingham County, graduating from Moreland High School.
On Dec. 23, 1942 Velda married Quinton Blackburn in Blackfoot. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Together they had seven sons, Terrell, Brent, Kevin, Varon, Chad, Parker and Joel.
During World War II Velda worked for the Draft Board and later at the Blackburn Merc in Blackfoot. She worked alongside her husband on their dairy farm and was also a operator at Simplot. In her free time she enjoyed needlepoint, loved to collect salt shakers, go fishing and go for rides. She was not afraid of hard work and had a large garden that she tended and canned the produce. She was a wonderful cook and made delicious homemade bread. She will be known for her generous service to others.
Velda was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Most of her service was in the Young Women’s organization and later was in the stake Young Women’s presidency.
Velda is survived by her husband, Quinton of Springfield; sons, Brent R. (Sue) Blackburn of Angleton, Texas; Kevin M.(Connie) Blackburn of Kingston, Tenn.; Varon Q. (Verena) Blackburn of Idaho Falls; Parker M. (Diana) Blackburn of Blue Springs, Mo.;and Joel M. (Botswana) Blackburn of Columbia, Mo.; daughters-in-law, June Thomas of Bountiful, Utah and Marlene Rounds of Rigby; brothers, Neil H. McKnight, Reed Wilson McKnight, James McKnight, Kent M. McKnight, John McKnight and Harrison McKnight Jr.; sisters, Margaret Brown, Sharlene Gurney, Myrtle Larsen and Jane Whimpey; stepbrothers, Milton Cottrell Jr. and Elmer Cotterell; stepsister, Eunice Pratt; 26 grandchildren; and 42 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sons, Terrell and Chad; and one grandson, Cole.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7, 2012 at the Lakeview LDS Church. Family will meet with friends and relatives from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012 at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 South Shilling Avenue in Blackfoot and for one hour prior to services at the church.
Interment will follow the services at the Moreland Cemetery.
