MORELAND — Snake River took to the mats at home against Firth for a Bingham County match up on Wednesday evening. SR started the night with three JV matches against Firth. The highlight of the JV matches was Cutler Howell’s match against Hunter Ririe which was a tech in the second round. Firth’s JV took two of the matches while SR won one. After several forfeits from the Firth team and several others as the night progressed, the varsity matches started at the 120 weight class with Kaden Bench wrestling Jace Wilding.
After a nail-biter of a match, Wilding squeaked by with a one point win. The next match was Wyatt Vogler against Layton Wasia with an exhausting three rounds where both wrestlers put forth elite efforts, Wasia took the match by points. Max Hite and Jackson Thompson wrestled at 145 and Thompson was able to get the win by pin but Hite fought hard all three rounds and never let up making it difficult for Thompson to get the win.
Austin Summers took control early in his match against Rylie Clemens and pulled out a much needed win by pin with 23 seconds left in the first round. Summers said, “the match went well. Firth has a couple of good wrestlers and some of them are my good friends. I hope I do well at the tournament this weekend. My goal in Buhl is to never get pinned.” At the 152 weight, Cache Cardona and Taylor Medows went next. As the two wrestlers went back and forth on control and neutral stances, Medows was able to win by one point in the end. Zane Stephenson and Connor Montgomery took to the mats next. Montgomery took an early lead at 5-0 but by the end of the second round, Stephenson had made up some points and it was 5-3. The third round ended with the same score. The match up at 170 was action packed with Carlos Molina taking on Firth’s Matt Lindberg. “Lets go Carlos! Keep Working!” could be heard from the stands as Molina worked hard and took any advantage possible to get the win. After a third round tie, the match went into the forth, fifth and sixth rounds. Both wrestlers were fatigued but were giving it all they had when Lindberg was able to get an escape point and take down at the end of the sixth round. It certainly was one of the most exciting matches of the night.
The final matches of the night were the heavier weights. Firth’s Miles ended up winning by points, Madsen winning by tech, and Andersen winning by major decision. The team win would come to the last match of the evening with Hayden Sutton wrestling Coltyr Brewington. Sutton put up a great fight, but Brewington was able to edge him out with a win making the final team score Firth 39, SR 30. Snake River travels to Buhl this weekend for the Buhl Invitational Tournament.
