RIGBY — In a high scoring affair at Rigby High School the Blackfoot Lady Broncos came up on the short end of the scoreboard as they fell 72-64 to a hot shooting Lady Trojan squad to tip off the 4A 5th/6th district tournament on Tuesday evening.
"If you would have told me before the game that we were going to score 64 points I would have taken it," Blackfoot head coach Merle Smith said. "Rigby shot lights out on us tonight though. We didn't expect them to shoot the ball so well so we were packing it in and they did a good job of shooting the ball."
In a see-saw first quarter of play it was the long range shot that got the Lady Trojans going as Tori Anderson knocked down 3 of her 5 long range bombs in the opening frame.
Blackfoot had a long range sharp shooter of their own however as Mariella Alvarez matched Rigby shot for shot as she knocked down two of her game high six three point baskets in the opening frame and with a running shot at the buzzer by Cassandra Clarke, the score stood at 21-20 in favor of Rigby after one quarter of play.
Alvarez finished the night with 22 points while Clarke poured in 19 for the Lady Broncos.
For as hot as the Lady Broncos were to begin the night, the start to the second quarter was down right frigid as Rigby pulled out to a 33-23 lead courtesy of a 12-3 run, eventually leading to a 39-30 halftime advantage.
For the remainder of the second half of play Blackfoot battled tooth and nail with the home standing Rigby squad, pulling to within 5 points on two different occasions. Unfortunately for the Bronco faithful Rigby was very proficient at the free throw line as they knocked down 14 of 18 charity tosses in the fourth quarter, 24 of 34 for the game, to hold off the comeback attempt.
"When we got to within five I really thought that we were going to hit that big shot to put us over the hump," Coach Smith said. "We're a young team though and we just need to learn how to finish down the stretch. It's positive that we are still improving and we are in no different position now than before the game. We need to win three games and I hope that we will get another chance to play this team."
Blackfoot will look to keep their season alive when they travel to the loser of the Pocatello-Bonneville game this Saturday. Tip off will be at 7 p.m. at whichever sight they will travel to.
