SHELLEY — The Blackfoot Broncos ran their winning streak to nine on Saturday as they danced amidst the raindrops at Shelley High School for a 10-0 victory.
The game was a classic pitchers duel through the first five innings as Dylan Mansanarez and Tyler Bean locked horns on the bump. A lone Blackfoot run in the top of the third inning was the difference through five as the two teams headed to the sixth inning with Blackfoot leading 1-0.
"We started a little slow with the bats. It looked like a prom hangover and in the third inning we told them to just be patient and focus at the plate," Blackfoot head coach Kenny Dahle said. "In the sixth inning we were able to break it loose."
And break loose the Broncos did as they tallied 8 runs in the top of the sixth inning. Blackfoot picked up RBI doubles by Cole Mansanarez and Justin Mathie in the frame. Colby Pearson legged out an RBI triple as well. With the big inning Blackfoot chased Bean from the game and then faced three more Shelley hurlers in the pivotal frame.
"Tyler threw really well but it just gets so tough when it's raining," Shelley head coach Trent Armstrong said. "That big inning happened once the rain hit and I think that the ball just got a little loose on him. It happens but when you are playing in these conditions you have to dig down deep."
Shelley tried to bounce back in the home half of the sixth inning as Josh Guiterrez was plunked on the first pitch. Guiterrez was off and running on the next pitch but a line drive to Russel Osborn turned into a tailor made double play to put a wet blanket on the would be rally.
"We've been real aggressive all year but hard hit balls were finding fielders today instead of finding the holes," coach Armstrong said.
Blackfoot added one more run in the top of the seventh when Mitch Martin worked his way to his third walk of the afternoon. Martin advanced to second on a passed ball and then score the tenth run of the day on a throwing error one batter later.
In the bottom of the seventh Dylan Mansanarez continued his efficient day as he worked a perfect 1-2-3 inning for the complete game victory.
"As the game went along Dylan just got stronger," coach Dahle said. "He was efficient. Pitched for outs and really didn't waste any pitches. As the game went along he just got more confident and really did a great job."
Mansanarez finished the day with 6 strikeouts, no walks while scattering 5 hits in a complete game in which he threw just 74 pitches.
Blackfoot (12-4, 6-0) will be back in action Tuesday when they host Madison for a non-conference tilt beginning at 4:30.
Shelley (8-4-1, 1-1) will step back into conference play when they host Teton. That game is also on Tuesday and will begin at 3:30 p.m.
