AMMON — You will have to excuse the Blackfoot Lady Broncos softball squad if they weren't just a little bit overanxious to play some ball on Monday. Due to weather and the schedule it had been ten days since they last set foot on the diamond as they traveled to Hillcrest for a make up game at the Lady Knights home field.
By days end Blackfoot doubled up the home team in a 4-2 win to run the season record to a most impressive 12-1.
"I'm glad that we had this game under our belts before playing Century tomorrow," Blackfoot head coach Matt Chavez said. "It's been a while since we've played. I was trying to call people to play because we really needed to get out on the field and get a game in. You could tell we were a little off today but this was not the same Hillcrest team that I saw play Pocatello earlier in the season. They have improved a lot."
Blackfoot struck first in the top of the first inning as Mattison Chavez ripped a stand up double off of the fence in left field and then came scampering home courtesy of an RBI single off of the bat of Morningrose Tobey.
The score stayed at 1-0 until the fifth inning when Sami MacFee ignited a rally with a sharp single. Cassandra Clarke moved MacFee into scoring position with a picture perfect sacrifice bunt and one batter later, Jessica Capson cashed in that runner with a 2-out RBI single for the 2-0 lead.
Madison Leslie pushed that lead out to 3-0 with a solo home run in the top of the sixth before Hillcrest finally got on the board with 2 runs in the home half of the same frame.
Leslie added an insurance run for the Lady Broncos in the seventh inning when she drove in Morningrose Tobey from second base with an RBI single.
"We have some girls that can really hit the ball," coach Chavez said. "Both Maddi's [Chavez and Leslie] where really hitting the ball hard today."
The runs were more than enough for Tobey who started the game in the circle for the Lady Broncos. Tobey was efficient, scattering 7 hits on the day while striking out 6 Lady Knights. Tobey was most impressive with runners on base. On three different occasions Hillcrest opened the inning with a base runner and on each of those instances, Tobey left them stranded with weak pop ups to the infield or routine ground balls to the left side of the infield.
"Morningrose does a good job of hitting her spots," coach Chavez said. "We could have made a few more plays behind her to. I thought that we had too many balls that fell just in front of or just over us that we usually get to."
Blackfoot will look to sharpen the edges when they host Century today for a conference double header with the Lady Diamondbacks beginning at 4 p.m.
