Fred Bennett Reid passed away peacefully Saturday, April 20, 2013, at his home near Firth.
He was born Feb. 25, 1919, at the family ranch along the Blackfoot River in Presto, Idaho, to Robert E. and Agnes Just Reid. He was the middle child of a loving family of five boys. He had a wonderful childhood roughhousing with his brothers, Eldro, Vin, Wallace and Doug.
Fred married Alma Jemmett, a beautiful girl from Cedar Creek, on Dec. 27, 1942. He was called to serve his country during World War II when Alma was pregnant with their first child. Happily, the war ended before Fred was shipped overseas.
Fred dedicated his life to the ranch his great-grandparents established in 1870. He was fortunate to work alongside his brothers his whole life. He especially enjoyed driving a team of work horses as a youth, flood irrigating, and cutting hay.
He and Alma raised hereford cattle, potatoes, hay, grain, and kids. They taught their children to work hard and to have fun doing it, whether trailing cattle to the hills, harvesting corral poles, or moving pipe. Fred on horseback, Alma’s favorite scene, was the subject of many of her watercolor paintings. At the end of the day she could hear him whistling home before she could see him. A gentle soul, he was a man of firm conviction, but few words.
After 67 years of marriage and mutual devotion, Alma passed away on Sept. 19, 2010.
Fred is survived by seven children: Richard (Charlotte) Reid of Firth; Janene (Jim) Cotton of Stevensville, Mont.; Donna (Bob) McWilliams of Annapolis, Md.; Merle (Jack ) Clark of Blackfoot; Becky (Ken) Davis of Firth; Kittie (Steve) Peterson of Blackfoot; and Wendy (Mark) Pratt of Blackfoot; 22 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother Wallace (Marlene) Reid of Firth and his sister-in-law Gwen (Vin).
Along with his wife, Fred was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a great-grandchild, Trevor Hudson Peterson.
A heartfelt thank-you goes to Fred’s eldest daughter, Janene, for the loving care given to both Mom and Dad during their last years.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 South Shilling Ave, in Blackfoot. Friends and family will meet from 9 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow the service with military rites at the Shelley Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Idaho Youth Ranch, PO Box 8538, Boise, ID, 83707.
