SHELLEY — It was a Bingham County battle Monday at Shelley High School as the Shelley and Blackfoot American Legion baseball teams took to the field for their only meeting of the season.
Shelley came into the game having been off for six days, while Blackfoot played in the Jackson Hole Tournament over the Fourth of July weekend before coming home a day early after rain needed the tournament Saturday.
Both squads have been playing well as of late as both teams sat at or neat the top of the district standings.
Something was bound to give between the two the teams.
After controlling game one earning a 6-2 win, the Russets due themselves a big hole in game two.
Blackfoot scored at least one run in every inning of the game, leading 5-0 after three innings. But as the Russets have done often this season, the battled back.
A Josh Peterson RBI double got Shelley on the board in the third. Shelley added two more runs in the fourth on a Hunter Carter RBI single and a wild pitch.
Three more came across in the fifth, but Shelley still trailed 7-6.
Blackfoot built a cushion in the bottom of the sixth when Russell Osborn and Taylor Pearson each had RBI singles, but with the bases loaded and one out, the Broncos were unable to get the big hit to blow the game open.
the Broncos got one more run in the seventh when Cody Evans ripped a RBI double to left field driving in Caden Preece.
Down four in the bottom of the seventh the Russets refused to lose.
Konnor Gilstrap walked to start the inning, Carter and Blake Butler each singled to load the bases.
Gilstrap scored on a wild pitch and Braxton Smith singled home Carter and Butler, just like that the Russets trailed by two.
Marcus Gustaveson doubled driving home Jason Burton to cut the lead to one, but Smith who was the trailing runner was thrown out at the plate.
After back-to-back hit by pitches the Russets had the bases loaded again.
Shelley head coat Tom Bean then caught the Broncos off guard when he had Adam Smith lay down a squeeze bunt driving home Gustaveson with the game-winning run giving the Russets an 11-10 win and the sweep.
The Shelley players raced towards the plate after the winning run scored mobbing Gustaveson and Smith and the Russets earned the sweep of their Bingham County rival.
All the offense in game on came from the Russets in the first two innings and Connor Montgomery accounted for three of the five runs.
Montgomery had an RBI double in the first and a two-RBI double in the second as Shelley raced out to a 5-0 lead.
While Shelley put runs on the board, the Broncos struggled.
Blackfoot left the bases loaded twice in the first five innings managing to scrape across single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Cody Evans went 5-for-8 at the plate for the Broncos. Brady Trappett added another four hits on the afternoon.
Josh Peterson led the Russets going 5-for-6 at the plate with three RBI, Gustaveson added another threes hits.
Shelley return to the field today when they host the Idaho Falls Bees at 4 p.m. Blackfoot is off until Wednesday when they host the Idaho Falls Rangers beginning at 4 p.m.
