Joyce H. James, 86, passed away July 28, 2013 in Salt Lake City, Utah from natural causes.
Joyce was born June 3, 1927 in Idaho Falls to Oliver D. and Violet Hendrickson.
Joyce was raised in Idaho Falls and graduated from high school in 1945. She attended college in Logan, Utah at Utah State University. While there she met J. Carl James and they were married in the Idaho Falls, Idaho LDS Temple on June 30, 1948. At that time Joyce left school and started a family.
After living in Idaho and Utah, Joyce and Carl moved to Moreland. While there, Joyce returned to school and earned her B. S. degree in Home Economics. While in college at Utah State University, she was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. She also obtained her teaching certificate.
Joyce and Carl moved to Rockford, where Carl worked in agriculture and Joyce taught school in Blackfoot and Snake River school districts. Joyce taught grade school and multiple subjects in junior high, though her main subject was Home Economics. She retired after 30 years of teaching. After retiring, Joyce obtained her Master’s Degree from Idaho State University in Psychology/Counseling in 1998.
She and Carl moved to Evanston, Wyo. and then to Salt Lake City, Utah following Carl’s retirement.
Joyce has been an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since childhood.
She was active in the Toastmistress Club in Blackfoot, holding multiple local and national offices. She was an expert seamstress and loved gardening, crafts and reading.
Joyce is survived by her husband of 65 years, J. Carl James; her children: Brent C. (Eve) James, Carolyn J. (Samuel) Giannini, Alan F. James, Blair C. (Jonna) James, Greg C. (Bobbi) James; 16 grandchildren, nine great- grandchildren and one sister, Marcene H. Burns.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Sherry Annette James; her parents and four sisters, Virginia (Lewis) Perkins, Gladys (Lyman) Burnham, Jean (Merrill) Hanson and Shirley (Harlan) Smith.
Funeral services will be held at noon, Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013 at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave, Blackfoot. The family will meet with friends and relatives for one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Fielding Memorial Park.
