SHELLEY — For 79:40 the Shelley High School girls soccer team played with and even at one time led a very feisty Rigby squad.
But with the seconds winding down Rigby's Kaylin Jensen sent a free kick into the upper left corner of the goal from 35 yards out to give the Trojans a 3-2 over the Lady Russets.
The free kick capped off a wild second half that saw Shelley erase a one goal halftime deficit and take the lead a mere 10 minutes prior, but down the stretch the Lady Russets defense appeared to fatigue allowing Rigby open runs at the net.
Rigby took the lead in the first half when Kendra Lesperance found a wide open right side of the goal with a laser.
Things could have been at lot worse for Shelley during the remainder of the first half, but Rigby players missed three wide open nets and hit the goal post or crossbar two other times.
During his halftime speech Shelley head coach Jim Gregory told his team to match the Trojans physical play and to get aggressive on their runs towards the net.
It did not take long for the Lady Russets to heed Gregory's advice.
Just three minutes into the half Jasmin Vega hit the crossbar just out of the reach of the Rigby goalie.
A few minutes later Vega found the back of the net after the Rigby keeper misplayed the ball and she sent into the back of the net.
Ten minutes later Kira Marlow was driving towards the goal, but as she went to let her shot go she was tackled from behind just inside the penalty area setting up a penalty kick.
Vega cashed in the penalty kick to give the Lady Russets a 2-1 lead.
The lead lasted a mere 20 seconds.
ON the ensuing kick-off Rigby took the ball and roared down the field. As Rigby's Elsja Mecham was going to be collapsed on by Russets defenders she launched a shot from 30 yards out that beat the Shelley keeper and tied the game.
Rigby controlled the remaining minutes until the free kick that won the game.
Shelley plays at North Fremont on Tuesday.
