Merlene Allen Heileson, 72, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013.
She was born to the late Clinton and Merle Allen on Sept. 30, 1941 in Blackfoot. Merlene graduated from University of Idaho in 1963 with a degree in Home Economics and Music and later received a Master of Elementary Education from Brigham Young University.
Merlene taught elementary school in the Provo School District for 22 years before retiring in 2007. She was passionate about teaching and was able to make a difference in many children’s lives. She was a multiple year Golden Apple Award winner and mentored numerous student teachers throughout her career.
Merlene was an active member of the LDS Church and held many callings over the years. Her favorite, though, was as a Primary pianist where she was able to combine her amazing musical talents with her love for children.
Merlene is survived by four children: Marvin (Tami) Heilesen of Evanston, Wyo.; Heidi (David) Smith of Denver, Colo.; Marc (Monique) Heileson of Seattle, Wash. and Heather (Chuck) Ivester of Ogden, Utah. She also is survived by eight grandchildren, Payton, Sydney, Bryson, Alex, Erik, Leah, Harrison and Niels.
A viewing was held on Thursday, Jan. 2 from 6-8 p.m. at Myers Mortuary on 845 Washington Boulevard, Ogden and will be held on Friday, Jan. 3 from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the Old Post LDS Church on 5191 Old Post Road (the corner of Shadow Valley Drive and Old Post Road) followed immediately by funeral services at 11 a.m. A graveside service and burial will be in Blackfoot later that afternoon in the Grove City Cemetery.
