FIRTH — Entering the fourth quarter the Firth Cougars held a 12-point lead and were in control of their game with South Fremont.
But a 13-2 run by the visiting Cougars in the final three minutes of the game cut a 14-point Firth lead down to three with less than a minute left in the game.
But in the final 37 seconds Firth outscored South Fremont 6-3 to earn a 49-45 victory Wednesday night.
During that game closing run South Fremont got a pair of three pointers from Cade Schaat and another from Ryker Maupin as Firth's perimeter defense broke down.
But Firth was able to break the Cougars full court press and get to the free throw line and get a layup from Dallan Bingham in the final seconds to close out the game.
While the final eight minutes saw South Fremont claw their way back into the game, in the opening 16 minutes Firth controlled all aspects of the game.
Firth opened the game on an 11-2 run thanks to five points from Bingham and a three from Zak Johnson.
The hot shooting for Firth continued in the second quarter as Jordan Chapman nailed a pair of three-pointers to send Firth into the locker room up 23-10.
South Fremont asserted the defensive pressure in the third quarter and got all of their offense from two players.
Maupin scored seven of his game-high 15 points on the third quarter, the other five points came from Can Bauer. South Fremont trailed by 12 heading into the final quarter.
Chapman lead Firth with 14 points, Johnson added 12.
Firth (10-3) play at West Jefferson on Friday.
