Martin Rodney Mickelsen, 59, of Blackfoot, passed away on Wednesday Feb. 4, 2014 in Wright, Wyo. from heart failure.
He was born on July 21, 1954 in Blackfoot. Martin was the fifth of six sons born to Lawerence and Jean Mickelsen of Groveland. After six boys were born to the Mickelsens, they welcomed Martin’s sister, Carrie.
Martin graduated high school in 1972 and then attended college at Idaho State University, majoring in Agriculture Business. At the age of 19 he purchased a herd of dairy cows and continued farming for the next 36 years. Martin milked cows and planted and harvested crops. He was an excellent farmer and had a tender heart for the animals in his care even to the point of reciting their genealogy.
In 1979 he met Lynn Doan, while she was managing the Bingham Coop Feed and Tire Store. They were married on Jan. 3, 1981. Lynn had three children from a previous marriage; Craig, Doug, and Traci, who Martin openly accepted as his own. Lynn immediately immersed herself in the farm and soon after left her employment to help Martin on the farm full-time. They worked side-by-side and often ankle deep over the next 27 years. They both retired from farming in 2008. Martin also enjoyed reading and learning about new things.
In 2012 he got his CDL with an A endorsement and set out for a new adventure driving semi-trucks in the southwestern part of the United States. In 2013, he worked in five different states including Wyoming. He was in Wyoming at the time of his death.
Martin is survived by his wife, Lynn Mickelsen of Groveland, sons, Craig (Barbara) Doan of Weiser, Doug Bowers, of Blackfoot, Traci (Bart) Hebdon of Blackfoot; his two brothers, Kip (Sherry) Mickelsen, of Rising River, Todd (Deanna) Mickelsen, Groveland, sister, Carrie (Mike) Brown, Texas; sister-in-law, Lesile (Larry) Mickelsen, Blackfoot; 8 grandchildren, Ashley (Gordon), McLean, Pocatello; Cassidi (James), Klimek, Boise; Bart J. Hebdon and Cade Hebdon, both of Blackfoot; Shamein Bowers and Shan Bowers both of Blackfoot; Chad (Sidra), Genesse; Angie Hammond, Moscow; 3 great-grandchildren, Kinzley and Kyler McLean, of Pocatello and Emily Hammond, of Moscow.
