NAMPA — All season long Blackfoot's Bryant Sargent has been focused on the goal of winning a state championship.
After the first day of the state wrestling tournament Sargent's goal is one match away.
The Balckfoot senior made it through the first day of the tournament unscathed and will take on Bonneville's Jared Bird today for the 170 pound 4A title at the Idaho Center in Nampa.
Sargent took down Nampa's Afton Silva in the first round 6-4, he then earned a win over Bishop Kelly's Mark Greene in round two to move on to the semifinals.
In the semifinals Sargent defeated Kuna's Braydon Shell by a score of 9-5 to take on Bird. Sargent and Bird have met a couple of times this season and have split each meeting.
Sargent is the only Bronco still alive to win a state title as Chase Wasia and Lane Hunt were defeated in the semifinals at 138 and 120 pounds respectively. Both will begin action today in the hunt for a top five finish.
As a team the Broncos sit in eighth place with 57 points. Kuna leads the 4A classification with 244.5 points, Bonneville is second with 188 and Columbia rounds out the top three with 140.5 points.
Defending state champion Treyton Nilsson of Snake River will have the opportunity to win his second consecutive state championship today after he took down Mike Hyndum with a pin at the 2:15 make of the match.
Dayton Schild will also wrestle for a title for the Panthers at 145 pounds after he earned a 8-5 win over Logan Case of Parma.
Rounding out the Panthers finalists is Morgan Smith who defeated Landunn Koyle of Gooding 8-3 to give the Panthers three wrestlers competing for titles.
Kaden Bench and Wyatt Vogler each fell in their semifinal matches at 120 and 152 pounds respectively.
Shelley had two semifinalists, but just one, Takoda Bingham moving on to the finals.
Bingham defeated Payette's Chase Neill 12-1 to earn a finals berth at 138 pounds.
At 152 pounds the Russets Josh Calderwood fell in the final seconds of the match 8-7 to Cody Bumgarner of Fruitland.
Snake River is second in the team standings with 119 points with Fruitland sitting in first by large margin with 225.5. Teton is third with 115.5 points.
Shelley is 15th with 38 points.
When the semifinals began Firth had six of their nine wrestlers in the semifinals of the 2A classification.
When everything was all wrapped up three of the six had moved onto the finals.
Layton Wasia continued his undefeated season with a victory over North Fremont's Carlos Romero, the same person he beat for the 2A District 6 title last week at 145 pounds.
Wasia will take on Aberdeen's Clancy Beck who won his semifinal match over Josh Richmond of St. Maries 8-3 to set up an all-Bingham County final.
Connor Montgomery at 160 pounds and Coltyr Brewington at 285 pounds round out the group of Cougars finalists.
Firth sits tops in the team standings after day one with 114 points, three points clear of second place Malad. Aberdeen is 17th with 34.5 points.
Wrestling gets underway this morning at 9 a.m. the finals are scheduled to get going around 3:30 p.m. today at the Idaho Center in Nampa.
