LeRoy Elsdon Howard Jr., 89, of Blackfoot, Idaho passed away Thursday, May 29, 2014 at The Willow’s.
Elsdon was born March 5, 1925 in Blackfoot, Idaho to LeRoy Elsdon Howard and Hannah Elizabeth Gummersall. He attended school in Blackfoot, graduating from Blackfoot High School.
He served in World War II in the United States Army and served as a cook on a ship called USS Granmede in various locations. After the Navy, he attended BYU and graduated in chemistry.
Elsdon met Juanita Virginia Hostetter while they were both serving missions in California. After the completion of their missions, they were married on July 25, 1948 in Roanoke, Va. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on Aug. 4, 1948.
Elsdon was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in most capacities of the church, including in the bishopric, Scouts, and served four missions, a sealer in the Philippines (two times) and Idaho Falls Temples and in Arkansas in the extraction program, photographing records.
He had worked for the Department of Energy as a health physicist, first in Tooele, Utah and then from 1956 until his retirement. In his free time, he enjoyed riding along in a patrol car with his friend, camping, fishing and being outdoors.
Elsdon is survived by his sons, Ronald Elsdon (Karen) Howard of Gilvert, Ariz.; Donald David (Doreen Elizabeth) Howard of Blackfoot and Roy Lee Howard of Idaho Falls; brother, Frank (Betty Jean) Howard of Cupertino, Calif.; sister, Luella McBride of Blackfoot; 12 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita; parents; daughter, Penny Caldwell; and four infant brothers and sisters.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 11, 2014 at the Groveland LDS Church, 155 North 380 West in Blackfoot.
The family will meet with friends and relatives from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10, 2014 at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 South Shilling Avenue in Blackfoot and for one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will follow at the Groveland Cemetery.
