BLACKFOOT — It had been a few weeks since the Blackfoot American Legion baseball team has played a game on their own field, but Wednesday the Broncos returned home against county rival Shelley.
After a 40 run explosion at the Twin Falls tournament last weekend the Broncos were looking to continue their winning ways, while the young Russets were looking to get some momentum going as they have a large chunk of home games upcoming.
Blackfoot's offense kept rolling in game one earning an 11-3 win, but behind the arm and bat of Josh Peterson the Russets took game two 7-6.
In game on the Broncos got on the board first plating three runs in the opening inning on an RBI double from Dallin Fairchild. Tyler Lindsay followed with a two-RBI groundout two batters later.
RBI's were something Lindsay would be very familiar with before the game ended.
The Broncos catcher went 1-3 in the game, but he drove in five of the Broncos 11 runs.
Taylor Pearson had an RBI hit in the third and Lindsay drove in his third run of the game with a groundout later in the inning. He capped of his day with a two-RBI single to spark a five-run sixth for Blackfoot.
Broncos starter Alex Martinez kept the Shelley hitters off balance during his four innings of work.
Martinez allowed just four hits and pitched himself out of a few jams to lead the Broncos efforts.
The Russets finally got their offense going in the fifth when Cole Baler led off the inning with a single.
After a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, Zack Leal and Stockton Stohl each followed with singles, Strohl's hit drove in the Russets first run.
Stohl drove in his second run of the game in the seventh with his second RBI hit.
Blackfoot had the chance to end the game in the sixth via the 10-run rule, but with runners on second and third and one out the Broncos got a pair of groundouts instead of the game ending hit.
Shelley's Josh Peterson was not on the Shelley bench during the game one loss to the Broncos, but when the lineups were announced for game two Peterson was penciled in as the starting pitcher by head coach Trent Armstrong.
Not being available for game one had little effect on Peterson as he went 4-for-4 at the plate and pitched a complete game as the Russets held on for a one-run win.
Each team scratched out a run in the first inning, but after struggling to get anything going offensively in game one, the Russets finally got going in the third inning of game two.
The inning started with a leadoff walk.
After a sacrifice bunt, Peyton Whitaker walked and Peterson singled. Jason Burton drove home the first run with a groundout.
Baler and Sam Nii each had two-RBI hits in the inning as the Russets sent nine batters to the plate to take a 6-1 lead.
But the Broncos battled back to close the gap to one run heading into the bottom of the seventh.
After getting a single run in the bottom of the third on three RBI singles from Pearson, Kyle Scott and Martinez.
Shelley tacked on a run in the top of the seventh to make the lead 7-5, Blackfoot was not going to role over and play dead for the Russets.
With one out Pearson walked, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball.
Martinez drove him home with a single.
After moving all the way two third with two outs, Martinez was stranded on third to end the game.
Connor Kershaw went 4-for-4 at the plate for the Broncos. Peterson was 4-for-4 for the Russets.
Blackfoot travels to the Burley tournament today for a game at 1:30 p.m. Shelley travels to Wood River today for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
