Blackfoot Legion splits with Pocatello

BLACKFOOT — The start of the 2013 American Legion baseball season was delayed by a couple of days for the Blackfoot Broncos thanks to a scheduling error.
But the layoff did not seem to have any ill affects as the Broncos earned a doubleheader split with the Pocatello Razorbacks Wednesday at Blackfoot High School.

The Broncos took game one on a walk-off single by Tyler Lindsay. In game two Pocatello jumped out early and held on for a 9-6 win.
"It was good to get out and get the rust off," Blackfoot head coach Jeff Katseanes said. "I thought for the most part we played pretty good, we made a few errors, but overall I thought for the first time out it was a good effort."
Blackfoot fell behind in the opening innings of game one trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third.
Shad Lewis doubled to start the third. After a strikeout Cody Evans reached on an error setting the table for Russell Osborn.
Osborn delivered, as he laced a single to center field driving home Lewis and Osborn to tie the game at 2-2.
Later in the inning Justin Mathie gave the Broncos the lead with a two RBI single of his own.
Pocatello answered tallying runs in each of the next two innings to take a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.
The bottom of the seventh started with Osborn reaching base on a dropped third strike. Katseanes walked and then on a very gutsy call stole second as part of a double steal. While Katseanes slid into second the throw was cut off by the Pocatello shortstop who immediately fired home trying to catch a breaking Osborn.
Osborn beat the tag cutting the deficit to one.
After a single by Taylor Pearson, Lindsay roped a single up the middle to give the Broncos the 6-5 victory.
"That was a good way to start off the year," Katseanes said. "We battled back and got the big hits when we needed them."
In game two a six-run second inning by Pocatello proved to be too much for the Broncos to overcome.
Blackfoot led 2-1 after on after getting an RBI double by Evans and an RBI single from Osborn.
But in the second three hits by the Razorbacks and three errors by the Broncos led to six Pocatello runs.
Blackfoot pitching held the Razorbacks scoreless until the sixth when they tacked on two more runs.
The Broncos scored four runs in the fifth inning getting RBI hits from Mathie and Brady Pearson. Two more runs scored on a fielding error by the Razorbacks.
But the Broncos could add no more.
Mathie finished the day 3-for-7 with three RBI. Osborn added another three hits and three RBI.
"We hit the ball pretty well today," Katseanes said. "But I thought we pitched really, really well today. I think if we would have played Monday we would be doing really well."
The Broncos now head to Twin Falls for the Twin Falls wood bat tournament.
Blackfoot takes on Kimberly today at 10 a.m. and then plays Greater Nevada at 4 p.m. Both games will be played at Harmon Park in Twin Falls.
