Blackfoot miscues lead to loss

IONA – On paper Thursday night’s game between Bonneville and Blackfoot appeared to favor the Bees who are looking to stay up near the top of the 4A District 5/6 standings.

After the opening two Bonneville possessions it appeared the Bees would roll to an easy victory as quarterback Tanner Smith found tight end Chance Reese with two first quarter touchdowns.
But after those first eight minutes the Broncos came roaring back.
In the end 60 yards in penalties, two that caused head coach Stan Buck to be ejected from the game as Bonneville held on for a 34-28 victory at Thunder Stadium Thursday night.
The cold and wet conditions had an effect on throwing for both teams, so it was going to be a ground game for both squads.
With the Blackfoot receivers having trouble hanging on to the ball, Kylar Haddon became the main offensive weapon for the Broncos.
Haddon got the Broncos on the board at the end of the first quarter with an 11-yard touchdown run. After a Gabby Botello extra point the Broncos trailed 13-7.
But with time expiring in the opening quarter Smith ran through the Blackfoot defense for a 58-yard touchdown run, the first quarter ended 19-7 Bonneville.
After a Bonneville fumble to start the second quarter Haddon capped off the Broncos ensuing drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. The run was set up by a Taylor Pearson 22-yard run on a double reverse that ended with Pearson getting leveled at the one-yard line.
Pearson got up a little wobbly and left the field. He would not return after being diagnosed with a concussion.
Later in the quarter Blackfoot’s Chase Causey had an interception wiped out by a pass interference penalty, that call got coach Buck to jaw with the officials.
The jawing only got worse as the quarter wound down.
On the Broncos next possession and the team driving, James Korth went up to grab a pass, the defensive back was holding down one arm while Korth raised his other which looked to most as a pass interference penalty.
The referees did not call the penalty and coach Buck lost it.
Back-to-back 15-yard penalties pinned the Broncos back and caused Buck to be ejected from the game.
A Lincoln Clayton 12-yard touchdown run appeared to send the momentum back Bonneville’s way. But on the ensuing kick-off Korth returned the ball 85-yards for the touchdown.
Bonneville led 27-21 at halftime.
Clayton got Bonneville on the board in the third quarter with a 15-yard touchdown run.
But the Broncos could not get crucial yards in two consecutive fourth and short situations.
Botello, who replaced Pearson at quarterback threw a late touchdown to Korth, but it was not enough.
Haddon finished the game with 113 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns.
Matt Peterson had 76 yards rushing and 52 receiving in the game.
Clayton led Bonneville with 232 yards on 26 carries and two touchdowns.
