Blackfoot tennis opens season

POCATELLO — The Blackfoot High School tennis squad opened their 2013 season on Tuesday afternoon as they battled with a pair of perennial tennis powers in Century and Wood River.
Playing at Century High School the Broncos more than held their own as the boys team beat Wood River 4-2 and tied Century 3-3. The girls squad also beat Wood River by the tally of 4-2 but they fell to a deep Century squad 1-5.

"To go 2-1-1 against two of the tougher schools in the state was just fantastic," Blackfoot head coach Brint Jeffris said. "Both schools are always in the running. Wood River does well at state every year so to pick up a pair of wins against them really bodes well for us."
Against Wood River Blackfoot got a win in first boys singles by Daylan Bird by the final score of 6-2, 6-0 and a sweep of both boys doubles and both mixed doubles events. Tanner Norton and Jacob Harris reunited for a first doubles win 6-2, 6-2 while Jared Evans and Ryan Kunz tallied a most impressive 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory in second doubles.
"The match of the day was Jarad and Ryan in that boys doubles match," Coach Jeffris said. "They got hammered in that first set and to come back and win the next two with the pressure on for the team win was huge for them. They just got better and better and better as the match went along and it was a nice victory."
Blackfoot also swept the mixed doubles events with Tyler Cannon and Meg Matsuura teaming for a 6-0, 6-0 white washing in first mixed and the tandem of Ben Hong and Brandi Bird following suit with an efficient 6-2, 6-3 win in second mixed.
Bailey Dann picked up a win in third singles against Wood River while the first doubles team of Kendall Armstrong and Baylee Gorder picked up a solid 6-2, 6-1 victory to seal the win for the girls against Wood River.
"I was impressed with our first girls doubles team today," coach Jeffris said. "Not only did they get a win against Wood River but they matched up with the defending state champion and her sister when they faced Century. They pushed that team all the way to a tie breaker so I was impressed with their play today."
The girls got a full point against Century courtesy of a sweep of the mixed doubles events with a Cannon/Matsuura 6-3, 6-4 win and a Hong/Bird 6-2, 6-1 victory.
On the boys side of the ledger it was Valer Stiavnicky in second boys singles with a hard fought 7-5, 6-2 win to earn the second point for the Broncos while Norton and Harris completed their perfect day with a 6-1, 6-1 victory as the boys ended in a tie with the Diamondbacks.
"Tanner and Jacob had a good day," coach Jeffris said. "Our mixed teams were fantastic. Those wins were huge for both the girls and boys teams."
Blackfoot returns to the courts on Thursday when they host Madison beginning at 3:30 p.m.
