Ethel Roberts Hernandez, 89

POCATELLO — Ethel Roberts Hernandez, 89, a former longtime Fort Hall resident and wife of the late Manuel Hernandez, passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at the Gables Assisted Living in Pocatello of causes incident to age.
Ethel was born Dec. 23, 1921, the daughter of Samuel Leo Roberts and Elva Fanny Call Roberts in Chesterfield.
Ethel was raised on the family farm in Toponce where she spent many memorable days helping her mother with the household chores and her father in the fields tilling the soil with horsedrawn farming equipment.
Ethel attended schools at Toponce Elementary, Lava High School and graduated in 1939 from North Gem High School in Bancroft. She grew up in Toponce and remained there on the family farm until leaving to attend seamstress training classes at Idaho State Trade School in Pocatello. It was during this time she met Manuel Hernandez at a dance. They married Nov. 6, 1941 in Pocatello. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on Aug. 13, 1963. Their marriage endured nearly 49 years before Manuel's untimely death Oct. 3, 1990.
Ethel was a very caring and protective mother who always provided for her family's needs and kept an immaculately clean and safe house to come home to. She was an excellent cook and truly enjoyed preparing Sunday dinner for her sons and daughter and their families. Ethel cooked for a number of years at the Old Fort Hall Elementary School when the lunch program provided homecooked meals for the children. However she realized her true calling in life was not working outside the home, but to be a loving mother and homemaker for her family, which she so eloquently accomplished.
Ethel is survived by two sons and one daughter: Robert A. (Trudy) Hernandez, Leslie M. (Antonia) Hernandez and Rayola (Clyde) Lowther. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Gwen Welch, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Leo Roberts and Elva Fanny Call Roberts; her husband, Manuel Hernandez; five brothers, Ellis Leo Roberts, Dorral Roberts, twins Robert L. and Albert C. Roberts, Jerold C. Roberts and one sister, Wenona Roberts Guidinger.
A viewing and visitation for family and friends will be Sunday, June 5, 2011, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Cornelison Funeral Home, 431 North 15th Ave., Pocatello.
