Firth wins battle of the Cougars

FIRTH — If the first game of the season was any indication the Firth Lady Cougars are going to have quite the 2013-14 season.
Kayla Jensen led four Cougars in double figures with a game-high 24 as Firth rolled to a 71-51 season opening win over South Fremont Tuesday night at Firth High School.

"That was a fun way to start the season," Firth head coach Sharla Cook said. "We still have a long way to go and we are not where we want to be but I thought it was a good team effort and that the team played very well together and there were a lot of assists tonight and that was good to see."
After a slow start Jensen got things going offensively in the second quarter.
After a pair of Bailey Nelson free throws to start the quarter, Jensen scored 10 consecutive points to spark a 17-0 Firth run that turned a four point deficit into a 13-point lead.
The experienced Cougars looked like that had been playing together a lot longer than just the last couple of weeks of practice and that was something Cook wanted to see in the first game of the season.
"I am looking for chemistry and how players play with one another," Cook said of what she looks for in a season opener. "We had a lot of good things happen, but we still have lots to work."
After the big Firth run, South Fremont battle back to cut their half time deficit to 33-26 after a 1-04 run of their own.
But it was the play of Jensen and the post play of Bailey Nelson that proved to be too much for South Fremont to handle.
Jensen added another 11 points in the third quarter and Nelson added 13 of her own when all was said and done.
Things to get any easier for Firth as they travel to West Side today.
"Road games are always tough," Cook said. "You have to be able to win on the road, so that will be a test for us as well."
Firth and West Side tip-off tonight at 7 p.m. in Dayton.
