Green Thumb Nursery in sixth year of serving community

BLACKFOOT – A person with a green thumb is said to be one who excels at growing beauty and food. Dennis and Peggy Mecham have appropriately named their retail business, the Green Thumb Nursery.
The retail outlet is one mile north of the Eastern Idaho State Fairgrounds.
“It can be found just before the road construction,” Peggy Mecham said.
The Mechams begin their gardening in February each year. The flowers and vegetables are planted in eight greenhouses on their property near Blackfoot. The greenhouses cover about 10,000 square feet of space.
“We cover our acreage in greenhouses,” Mecham said.
About 95 percent of what is sold in the nursery has been raised by the Mechams.
The pair has been raising flowers and vegetables for the past 30 years. For most of that time, the plants were sold wholesale. In 2005, they opened their retail store, the Green Thumb Nursery.
A variety of roses, perennials, annuals, bedding plants, hanging baskets--flowering and strawberries--vegetables and seeds are available.
“There are all kinds of vegetables,” Mecham said. These include tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, onions and all kinds of seeds.
“We offer the best prices in town or in the county,” said employee Janice Carlson. “We get happy customers who like our products, prices and above all, our ‘customer service.’”
The retail side of this business opens its doors about the first of May each year and closes the doors about July 1.
What doesn’t sell by that time is sold at Farmer’s Markets in Pocatello, Idaho Falls and/or Jackson, Wyo.
The Green Thumb Nursery is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
