Lady Bees sting Lady Broncos at the Hive

IDAHO FALLS - The Lady Broncos travelled up I-15 to the Bonneville Bee Hive to take on the Lady Bees and were stung to the tune of a 46-38 set back Friday night.
In a game that was closer than the final score would indicate, the Lady Broncos seemed poised to take the sting out of the Lady Bees until Erica Shenton scored nine straight points in the early going of the fourth quarter to put the Bonneville squad in front for good.
"We just couldn't seem to get a good close out on their three point shooters tonight and they took full advantage of it," said Assistant Coach Jared Arave. "When we finally did get a close out, we fouled Shenton and she made six free throws in a row."
The game began slowly for both squads as neither team found the bottom of the bucket until midway through the first quarter when Shenton drilled a long range three pointer. That bucket was quickly answered by Blackfoot's Delese Marshall, who hit from long range herself and the score was tied at 3.
The Lady Bees tallied on a put back basket by Emily Poulson and a free throw to hold a 6-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The basket seemed to loosen up a bit as both teams were able to get things going in the second period, but Bonneville took advantage of a pair of three pointers to open up an 18-12 half time advantage.
"We found ourselves in some bad defensive positions early, and weathered that all right," said Coach Mike Kirkham. "We tried to put some set plays in at half time, but we just couldn't execute offensively."
Blackfoot opened the third period much more aggressively and took advantage of a technical foul on Bonneville coach Ryan Harrigfeld to take their first lead of the night at 25-24 midway through the third period.
The two squads traded buckets for most of the rest of the period, and Blackfoot had a chance to take control of the game in the late stages of the quarter. The Lady Broncos held a five point lead and had the ball with 45 seconds remaining in the period.
A turnover and a quick three pointer by Shenton, one of her four on the night, cut the lead to two points at quarter's end, 32-30.
"We had the lead and the ball with a chance to score at the end of the third, and had the ball to start the fourth and couldn't capitalize on the situation," said Coach Arave. "Bonneville forced us into a turnover, scored, then we made an unforced error at the start of the fourth and just like that, the game was tied."
With Shenton scoring nine straight points and Ashley Trane adding another long three, the Lady Broncos were forced to play catch up the rest of the game.
Madison Pilster tried to jump start the offense, but the only scoring that the Lady Broncos could muster in the final stanza was a three pointer from April Marshall and a free throw and bucket from Pilster.
"You have to give Bonneville credit for keeping our leading scorer in check for most of the game," said Coach Kirkham. "Honena only scored in the third quarter and we a lot more out of her than that."
