Lady Broncos blank Lady Trojans

BLACKFOOT - When the Blackfoot Lady Broncos Soccer team took to the pitch on Thursday taking on the visiting Rigby Lady Trojans, they did so without three of their key starters.
Behind the inspired play of their defense and the addition of a pair of junior varsity call ups, the Broncos came away with an important 2-0 shut out of the Trojans, keeping their hopes of a district regular season title alive.
"Rigby came in here with their best team in many years," said Coach Scott Stufflebeam. "For the girls to step up their play and come away with a win today was huge for us."
The game began slowly for the Broncos as their play was lethargic at best as several of the players adjusted to new roles and positions that they hadn't played before.
But the defense stood tall, keeping the Trojans from mounting any significant offensive pressure and sophomore goal keeper Caya Ballesteros was a force in the net, stopping every shot the girls from Rigby were able to get.
Late in the first half, the Broncos were able to break through with a goal by Julie Martin, who was able to bounce the ball high over the Rigby goalie, who came out on a rush, and the ball rolled into the net giving the Broncos a 1-0 lead that they would hold into the intermission.
"Late in the first half, we seemed to get things together a little bit," said Coach Stufflebeam. "We finally used the wind to our advantage and put some pressure on their goal keeper and the result was the goal by Julie and that seemed to give all of the other girls more confidence."
