Lady Russets hang on for win over Eagles

SHELLEY — So far this season game have gone one of two ways for the Shelley Lady Russets, one a quick start and then a struggle to hold on at the end. Or two, A slow start and then a second half rally to get back into the game.
Wednesday night it was a hot start and some big plays down the stretch that gave the Lady Russet s 44-43 win over Marsh Valley.

With just 12.3 seconds left in the game and clinging to a 41-39 lead, the Lady Russets had the ball on the side line with three quarters of the court to go.
Indi Young inbounded the ball and found a streaking Ashlyn Yancey under the basket. Yancey are the layup and was fouled clinching the win for her team.
"We just made plays down the stretch," Shelley head coach Burke Davis said. "The play the Ashlyn made their to get the ball and the and one was the difference in the game for us."
But before the final seconds of the game ticked off the Eagles gave the Russets all the could handle in the final quarter.
Marsh trailed by four entering the final quarter and the Eagles subsequently ran off a 7-2 to start the fourth to tie the game at 35-35.
The two teams traded baskets until a lay-up by Young gave the Russets the lead for good.
"Indi made some great plays for us tonight," Davis said. "She was big down the stretch and hit some big shots."
Young finished the game with a game-high 14 points.
Shelley started the game hot offensively jumping out of the gate to a 13-4 lead.
But has been the case most of the season, the Russets went away from what was working in the opening quarter and it allowed the Eagles to creep back in.
"Tonight was a huge game that we can take a lot from," Davis said. "Number one I thought we are coming out of games great. Our transition was great in the first half and that was what gave us the lead we got out and ran."
The transition game continued in the final three quarters, but the Russets struggled to take advantage of their high percentage shots.
"The story of our game for us was our shot selection," Davis said. "We took a lot of low percentage shots and we did not convert and it allowed them to get back into the game."
But despite a last second opportunity to tie the game, the Russets escaped with the win and now have a two-game winning streak.
Kira Marlow added 11 points on the night for the Russets.
