Michael Rivers, 50

Michael Rivers passed away at the age of 50 at his home near Emeryville (Oakland), Calif. on Dec. 25, 2013.
Michael was born on Feb. 10, 1963 in Blackfoot to Robert and Eleanor Rivers. Michael grew up and attended Stalker Elementary School, Blackfoot Junior High and graduated from Blackfoot High School in 1981. Michael attended and graduated from the University of Oregon with a bachelor of arts in Journalism.
Michael loved to read, entertain his friends and was an explorer at heart. He traveled after college and made his home abroad in East Asia, settling in Bangkok, Thailand and Hong Kong, China. Here he was engulfed by the culture and tradition of the people there.
Michael began his career with Nation Multimedia Group, where he promoted English language proficiency among young television viewers, as well as performed on camera rolls in “Nation Junior TV” television program. He later moved on to “The Nation”, one of the premier news publications of Thailand where he provided news editing. Michael moved back to the States for a year in 1999 for personal family reasons.
He joined “The Herald” in Everett, Wash. as a copy editor. He later moved back to Asia and became a news editor in Hong Kong with “The Wall Street Journal” for the next seven years.
In 2007 he moved on to BNP Paribas Securities where he edited regional equity, economic and strategy reports for financial analysts and economists. Michael continued on with his career in Hong Kong by holding editor positions with the International Herald Tribune, Standard Charter Bank, and FXCM Asia until 2013 when he moved back to the States. He established residence in the San Francisco Bay area where he provided Media Consultant work for BrightWire Inc. editing a daily Asia-focused newsletter for the executive and staff of KKR, one of the world’s leading private equity investment firms.
Michael is survived by a brother, Rodney, who resides in the area of Chicago, Ill., and a sister, Pamela, who lives in Kingman, Ariz.. He was preceded death by his parents, Robert and Eleanor; a younger sister, Carla; and his niece, Mindy.
According to Michael’s wishes he was cremated and his ashes will be spread in the places he cared about the most, here in Blackfoot, Hong Kong and in the San Francisco Bay.
