Panthers take round one of rivalry

THOMAS โ€” When Blackfoot and Snake River meet regardless the sport anything can and does happen.
That was the case again Friday night as the Panthers and Broncos boys basketball teams battled to the very end with the Panthers coming back for a 43-40 lead in front of a packed house at Snake River High School.

'That was what a rivalry games are all about," Blackfoot head coach Dan Hale said. "It was fun to watch and it was a good game to coach in unfortunately we came out on the wrong end tonight."
The Broncos led by as many as 10 in the fourth quarter, but after Andrew Hatch's basket made the score 40-32, the Blackfoot offense went cold, but it was not from a lack of opportunities.
The Broncos missed a couple of layups in the quarter and for Snake River Kade Keller took over.
Keller scored seven of his game-high 16 points in the final eight minutes to give the Panthers done point lead with two minutes to go.
After keeping the ball out of the Broncos hands for over 45 seconds a couple of free throws extended the Panthers lead to three.
Blackfoot had a shot to get off a game-tying shot with 15.7 seconds left in the game, but the entry pass was intercepted and Snake River ran out the clock.
"The ball went into the high post on that last possession and it went to the wrong person," Hale said. "I asked the kids in the locker room if they understood why that was the wrong thing to do and they all answered yes, because we needed a three."
While the Panthers ended up winning the gamete game was a physical defensive struggle for the opening 16 minutes of play.
In the first half the two teams combined for 12 made field goals and 21 fouls giving the Broncos a 16-14 lead at the half.
In the third quarter the Broncos Harry Hoskins took over with his defense.
Hoskins had six points including two off of steals and layups in a 10-2 Bronco run that sent the team into the fourth quarter up 36-30.
But in the end the size and driving ability of the Panthers was the difference in the game.
Aaron Vail led the Broncos with 14 points.
