Panthers topple Savages in nail-biter

POCATELLO — It was a good old fashioned slugfest on Saturday afternoon as the Snake River Panthers took on the undefeated Salmon Savages in the quarterfinal round of the 3A state football championships.
At the end of the day, the game came down to the kickers with Snake River's Cooper Peterson hitting his lone field goal attempt and Salmons kicker failing on a potential game winner with 0:06 remaining as the Panthers escaped Holt Arena with a thrilling 23-21 victory.
"Cooper really came up big for us," Snake River head coach Jeff Dalley said. "We haven't had him for a while but he came out here, stepped up in a big spot and poked it through when we needed it."
Peterson hit what proved to be the game winner from 24-yards out with 4:28 remaining in the fourth quarter. At the time, the kick made the score 23-14 Panthers as they were responding to a furious comeback attempt by the Savages.
With the win, Snake River advances to the semi-finals where they will lock horns with conference rival Marsh Valley next Friday at 8:15 in Holt Arena.
