Paul Joseph Happel, Jr., 71

Paul Joseph Happel, Jr., 71, of Blackfoot passed away Monday, Aug. 29, 2011 in Pocatello at the Ridge Wind Assisted Living after a long illness.
Paul was born in New London, Conn., on March 20, 1940, to Paul Joseph Happel Sr. and Bessie Ann Doherty Happel.
The family lived in Mystic, Conn., and Paul attended school there until the family moved to Blackfoot for Paul Sr. who worked for Electric Boat. Paul attended schools in the Blackfoot area. The family returned to Connecticut and then back to Blackfoot where Paul Sr. worked for Westinghouse Electric NRF and the INEL.
Paul graduated from Blackfoot High School in 1959 and with encouragement from family and friends he went to college. He then graduated from Idaho State University.
When he was a kid living in Connecticut he worked on a dairy farm. He later worked at different jobs in Blackfoot area, including, Paul Merritt and Jack Merritt Chevron, Estenson’s and King’s variety store. After graduating from the university, he went to work for Westinghouse Electric NRF at the site, where he worked for 35 years. He worked for Wal-Mart in 2004 and in 2005 in the accounting office in Blackfoot.
He met and married Mary Elizabeth Trobough on Sept. 15, 1961. On Aug. 15, 1962, they were blessed with a son, Kenneth Paul Happel, who has been the best thing that ever happened to them with the way he has cared and helped them over the years.
Paul was a very active person who over the years enjoyed shooting, restoring automobiles with his dad, woodworking, skiing and helping his dad when they got in the horse business. His dad and mother were a big part of his life until they passed away. He built the farm in Blackfoot and built a home in Island Park.
Paul is survived by his wife, Mary of Blackfoot; son, Kenneth Paul Happel of Blackfoot; Raleigh and Gloria Marple’s family (Mary’s sister) of Portland, Ore.; Aunt Grace Musante, Uncle and Aunt Kenneth Beauchamp, all of Connecticut; cousins, nephews and nieces.
Paul suffered through his illness for a number of years. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, care givers, Access Hospice and all the friends who have given them support.
Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, at Grove City Cemetery conducted by Gloria Marple. The family will meet with friends and relatives from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave., Blackfoot. Interment will be in the Grove City Cemetery.
