Russets come back for season sweep of Broncos

SHELLEY — It was a tale of two halves on Wednesday evening with Blackfoot winning the first half and Shelley winning the second and in the end, it was the Russets who claimed victory with a 61-56 win on senior night.
"I was proud of our seniors tonight," Shelley head coach Dave Hadley said. "I thought that all of our seniors did a good job of contributing and that's a neat thing because I owe those kids an awful lot for what they've given to our program over the past couple of years and I was proud and happy for them to have a good night and finish on a win."
After a rousing pre-game ceremony to honor seniors from both the basketball team and the cheerleading squad, the two teams squared off before a packed house.
Blackfoot came out firing on all cylinders as they looked to spoil the festivities, knocking down 4 treys to open the game, en route to a 14-4 advantage.
"I thought that Blackfoot did a good job of confusing us early on," coach Hadley said. "They were able to make that big run to start the game because we didn't do a very good job of recognizing where we needed to attack."
Shelley showed some perimeter prowess of their own to open the second quarter, knocking down a trio of the long balls to close the gap to 18-16 with 4:51 remaining.
Blackfoot responded however, with a 12-4 run too close out the half and as the teams left the floor for half time, Blackfoot led 30-20.
"That first half we looked comfortable, we were there again, which has been the story of the season," Blackfoot head coach Jonathan Packer said.
The third quarter began much as the game did, with Blackfoot cashing in on a three ball by Colin Rockwood on the opening possession for the games biggest lead of the night at 13-points.
From there, Shelley started chopping wood, finishing the third quarter by outscoring Blackfoot 14-6, cutting the deficit to 5.
"Shelley guarded us a little differently with that half court trap and I thought that we handled the pressure a little better tonight but we still had to many turnovers," coach Packer said. "That pressure affected our shots. When we did get an open look we were either tight or sped up in a hurry and just didn't hit anything. That pressure totally took us out of our comfort zone."
The comeback continued into the fourth quarter and with Blackfoot leading 44-40 Shelley turned in a key :20 second stretch on the court.
McKay Cannon hit a three ball on the wing as Chad Leckington hit him on a skip pass. Kyle Killpack then got a huge blocked shot on the defensive end leading to a fast break on the other end where Killpack hit the driving lay up and collected the foul and in a blink of an eye, Shelley had their first lead of the night at 46-44.
"I think that the difference in the fourth quarter, we made a couple of three point shots that relaxed us a little bit and I think that allowed us to take a breath for a second and I thought that we did a much better job of skipping the ball which worked to our advantage," coach Hadley said.
From there Shelley steadily stretched their advantage by knocking down 9 of 13 charity tosses down the stretch, completing the season sweep of the Broncos.
Both squads will be back in action on Friday with Blackfoot hosting Century for senior night and Shelley traveling to Madison for a conference tilt.
