Russets cruise by Bees for tournament win

SHELLEY- The Shelley Russets opened district tournament play on Tuesday night as they hosted the Bonneville Bees. Shelley took control early and then cruised home with a 24-point victory as they opened their sixth district tournament play with a 63-39 opening round win.
The Russets ended the first quarter ahead of the Bees by five points 22-17. In the second quarter it was a storm of three pointers for Shelley. T.J. Stommel started out the quarter with a three point basket. Then with 2:37 left of the half McKay Cannon made another three, but he didn’t stop there because thirty seconds later he was back with another trey. Christian Cather also dialed long distance with his own three point basket and Shelley went into half time ahead 38-23.
“Hitting the three point shots really helped. We seen that Bonneville was setting it up and so we knew we had to kick it back down,” Shelley head coach Dave Hadley said.
The Russets were hard to stop the rest of the night. In the third quarter they busted ahead to a 23 point lead over the Bees, 54-31. Shelley made 14 points and held their opponents to only eight points. In the last quarter of the night the Russets kept the tempo going as they coasted home with the 63-39 victory.
Throughout the night the Russets defense stepped up and stole the ball from the Bees several times which helped in their winning efforts.
“Defensive effort was outstanding. We didn’t really get into it at first and then after the first couple possessions we were able to set the tempo,” Coach Hadley said, “The offense was very opportunistic. They ran great sets.”
Shelley’s top scorer of the night was Kaden Michaelson with 22 points while T.J. Stommel and McKay Cannon added 15 and 14 points each.
“Kaden and Christian played great in post. They weren’t selfish at all and they just did great,” Coach Hadley said.
Shelley (13-8) will travel to Madison Thursday night for a 7 o'clock tip off.
