Russets push through for 3-2 win over Trojans

SHELLEY — The Shelley Russets rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as they evened the season series with the Rigby Trojans with a 3-2 High Country Conference victory at Shelley High School on Wednesday afternoon.
"I'm very happy with the win and very happy with the way that the team came back from yesterday and did the things that we talked about," Shelley head coach Yence Mora said. "We've talked about three things. Get on base, get the base runner over and then get the base runner home and we did that today which was the key."

A day previous, the Trojans took advantage of some fielding miscues by the Russets to take a win on their home field.
Shelley corrected that aspect of their game on Wednesday as they commited just two errors behind a stellar pitching performance by a trio of Russet hurlers.
Braxton Ball got the nod from coach Mora to start the game and the left hander responded with 4 solid innings of work as he scattered 3 hits while allowing a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning.
T.J. Stommel entered in relief of Ball in the fifth inning and the lanky right hander stymied the Trojan hitters working a pair of scoreless innings for the win while Kaden Schmitt worked a perfect seventh inning for the save.
"We had a great pitching job by our pitchers today," Coach Mora said. "I thought that Braxton did a good job of keeping the ball down and trusting his defense. T.J. has a lot of talent but hasn't pitched a lot for us this year and Kaden looked good. I was satisfied with the pitching."
With the solid pitching and the steady defensive effort all that was lacking was the offensive production at the plate and in the home half of the sixth inning, Shelley got just enough for the win.
With one out in the inning and Ball standing on second base, Stommel then laced an RBI triple down the left field line, cutting the deficit in half at 2-1.
One out later, Josh Peterson came through with a clutch 2-out single which scored Stommel to tie the game at 2-2.
Shelley was far from done in the inning as Josh Guiterrez followed with a deep drive over the left fielders head which scored Peterson all the way from first base with the RBI double.
"Josh has been our lead off hitter all year and we moved him down today to take advantage of his long swing," Coach Mora said. "It worked out just right for us because he was able to drive in the winning run with that long swing. It feels good to get this win and if we can stay in the game both mentally and physically like we did today we can play with anyone."
Shelley (4-6, 1-3) will be back in action next Thursday when they travel to Hillcrest.
