Sheriff putting officers on school buses

Staff Writer

Reminder for motorists on Hwy. 39 who are approaching a school bus.
Bingham County Sheriff Craig Rowland wrote: "It has come to my attention that we are having a great deal of school bus stop arm violations on Highway 39 since they put the turn lane in. Idaho Code 49-1422 states that all vehicles must come to a stop in both directions on any roadway where there are three or less lanes of travel. In other words all traffic must come to a stop when a school bus has its stop arm out on any road that is three lanes or less."
On roadways that are four or more lanes, the only people who have to stop are the vehicles that are behind the bus.
The Sheriff's office will be out in force to combat people who are not stopping for school buses. Officers will be put on school buses to call in violators. Also in place will be chase cars to stop the violation.
Idaho Code 49-1422 is a misdemeanor and is punishable by a fine up to $500 plus court cost.
