Snake River fares well at major cross country meet

EAGLE — James Withers, the defending Class 3A state champion from Snake River, placed 17th in the elite division of the Bob Firman Invitational cross country meet on Saturday.
Whittier's time over the 5-kilometer course at Eagle Island State Park was 16 minutes 5 seconds.
The meet drew 140 teams from throughout the West including Utah, Oregon, Washington and, of course, Idaho.
"We were very honored to have been invited to participate in it," said Panther coach Mike Kirkham.
Freshman Joseph Van Orden placed second in the varsity division with a time of 16:52, inching out Sugar-Salem's No. 1 man for that position.
His sister, junior Quincy Van Orden, placed third in her race at 20:08.
Other Panther boys included Tragan Thomas in 36th (18:14), Joseph Fife in 66th (18:57), James Whittier in 68th (18:58) and Kai Baldwin in 121st (20:13). Tony Peace ran unattached and placed 49th in 18:39.
The Panthers boys placed 10th among small schools without Withers. The Panther girls placed fifth.
Other placewinners for the Panther girls were Olivia Anderson in 24th (21:59), Kimille Furniss in 37th (22:54), Sari Steadman in 51st (23:43), Kyra Trahant in 60th (24:22) and Jacy Van Orden in 70th (24:52).
