Warren Israel ‘Is’ Merrill, 82

Warren Israel “Is” Merrill lost his courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease on Monday, Feb. 28, 2011.  He passed peacefully, surrounded by his family.
Is was born Nov. 19, 1928, in Clifton to R.D. and Lucile Stoddard Merrill.  He grew up in a family of 13 children (11 boys and 2 girls).  Raised on the family farm, he learned how to work hard and be proud of the work he accomplished.
Is married his sweetheart, Lois Lundquist, on May 9, 1948.  Together they raised five brilliant and wonderful children.  Is was a grocer for nearly 30 years, most of them with Albertson’s, Merrill’s Clover Farm, and the Fort Hall Trading Post.  He loved knowing everyone in town, and they loved that he knew them.  He took this love of people and gift for communication to the Idaho Legislature where he was elected seven times, first to the House of Representatives and then to the Senate.  He was a tireless advocate for education and for those who needed a leg up.
Is also tried his hand at heavy construction, worked for the Idaho Lottery, and then spent several very happy years working for Hawker Mortuary where he was back in his element, shaking hands and being a friend and comforter to all.
He is survived by his wife Lois; his daughters Connie (Ed) Jamison, and Lynette (Mike) Tucker, and his sons Dana (Terry), Danny (Tammy), and Brian (Dena).  He is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Amy (Brady) Brower, Matthew (Susanne) Jamison, Calob Merrill, R.D. Tucker, Cy Merrill, Taylor Merrill, Shelby Merrill, Dylan Merrill, Lyken Merrill, Caden Merrill, and 7 great-grandchildren: Stella, Henry, Elliot, Anna, Jorie, Aidan, Harper, and Annora; siblings, Jed (Alvanita) of Alsea, Ore.; Clifford (Rowena-deceased) of Blackfoot, Richard (Shirley) of Blackfoot, Pauline (Dean) Hill of Blackfoot, Lloyd (Marge) of Blackfoot, Parry (Sonia) of Blackfoot and Calvin (Susan) of Claremont, Calif.
Is was preceded in death by his parents, 5 older siblings (Douglas, Owen, Windsor, Aquilla, and Dona), and a grandson, Chris Tucker.
The Merrill family would like to express their gratitude for the loving care Dad received during his short stay at the Renaissance.  They are also grateful for Blackfoot Home Health and Hospice, especially Pat Arave and our sweet friend Jesse Wadsworth.
Thank you Dad for instilling in all of us the importance of hard work, honesty, kindness and acceptance.  We learned by your example to always put family first, believe in others, never allow prejudice to be part of our lives, and that it’s OK to be proud to be a Democrat.  We love you, respect you, and treasure you.
A funeral service will be held at noon on Saturday, March 5, 2011, at Blackfoot 4th Ward, 520 N. Shilling Avenue in Blackfoot.
The family will meet with friends and relatives from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2011 at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 South Shilling Avenue in Blackfoot and for one hour prior to services at the church.
Interment will follow at the Moreland Cemetery.
