On November 22, 2019, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9443 held the annual student essays awards ceremony.  This ceremony honors the essay winners in the Patriot's Pen and Voice of Democracy essays.  The event was held at the American Legion Hall in Blackfoot, Idaho.

The themes were the same for both groups: "What Makes America Great."  These literary compositions always emphasize our country’s democratic and patriotic values.

I am always impressed by the essays and deeply moved by these brief masterpieces.  The VFW appreciates the thought and time required to compose these literary gems.

During the VFW Dinner and recognition of the Patriot's Pen and Voice of Democracy winners, there was ample time to recognize the veterans who served in Vietnam and Vietnam Era veterans (1955-1975). Ron Tapia, Service Officer of the American Legion Post 23, awarded the Vietnam Veteran Lapel Pin to the local veterans in the photograph (above).
